Unlocked dorm doors not cause of recent assaults
I have read Dallas Breck's letter to the Collegian about the assaults in Snyder Hall and, to use her words, "I am confused about it." She questions how several women could be assaulted by one guy, and why the women didn't scream, and why they didn't stick up for each other. She even states that the lack of response of the first victim "allowed 11 (sic) other girls to be assaulted." While she is certainly free to raise those questions, why isn't she asking, "Why did this man try to enter the rooms of so many women?" or "Why did he assault even one woman, let alone 12 (sic)?" The issue is not whether women stick up for other women. The issue is why some men assault women. "What were these girls doing?" she asks. Well I'm going to assume that they were sleeping. They were in their rooms; frankly, it doesn't matter what they were doing. Would it have been safer for them to lock their doors? Certainly. Does an unlocked door give someone permission to enter and assault you? Absolutely not. Ms. Breck states that she and her roommate would have responded to a similar situation by kicking an assaulter and immediately calling police. I hope they never have to find out if that would be the case.
