Letter to the Editor
Do not question motives of women involved in assault

After reading Dallas Breck's letter in Friday's paper, only two words come to mind. How brave. How brave you must be to publicly question the actions of the victims of sexual abuse. How brave you must be to point the finger at one girl whose inactivity you claim "allowed 11 (sic) other girls to be assaulted." How brave you must be to cast blame upon the women assaulted and not the man who actually did the assaulting. How brave you and your roommates both sound, fending off your imaginary attacker, who you claim would have been overpowered by you.

Be thankful, Dallas, that you were not sleeping in Snyder Hall that night and that a drunken person did not decide to put his or her hands on your body. Be thankful that you do not have to be the woman who was assaulted first, who now has to question if she "did the right thing" all because of an ignorant letter from someone who did not have to experience the pain she went through.

You boldly ask the question, "What were these girls doing? Greeting a drunken, strange guy who was trying to undress them and then falling back to sleep when he left?" Now I am asking you, Dallas, what were you doing when you decided to write a letter chastising these women for being asleep in their bedrooms in the middle of the night?

I am glad, for your sake, that you and your roommate both think that you would have had the strength to not only fend off an attacker that lies on top of you while you are asleep, but then have the composure to immediately tell everyone what just happened.

You think this story sounds suspicious?

So do I.

I think it's very suspicious that if I accidentally forget to lock my bedroom door one night I might wake up to someone assaulting me, and then when I decided to actually come forward with it and stand up for myself, I will have my motives and actions questioned.

Bravo Dallas, for your sensitivity, compassion, knowledge and tact.
