Old Main rally empowers women, PSU community

I don't know if I've ever felt as empowered by the community and solidarity at Penn State as I did after leaving the rally on the steps of Old Main Friday, which was in support of the victims of the sexual assault on campus.

As one of the co-organizers of the rally, I know the idea started out from a few women who were enraged that our sisters could be assaulted in their own dorm rooms. We were also upset that we didn't find out until three days after it occurred and that the university didn't issue any statements condemning the assaults.

This small group of angry people grew to dozens and dozens on the steps of Old Main. We were out there to tell these girls they are not alone, that it is not there fault, and that they should not be blamed in any way for the situation.

As more and more people walked by, men and women from all parts of the Penn State community joined us in marching, shouting and talking about this incident. We truly broke the silence and let Penn State know we will not tolerate this sort of thing happening to women here. It wasn't the first time it has happened. It happens all the time and it has to stop.

I want to thank everyone who came by and stood with us, everyone who shouted and spoke out, and everyone who may have just stopped for a moment and though about what goes on here. The feeling of support was amazing.

I want to tell the girls who were assaulted that they do have supporters, that they are not alone and that it is not their fault.

I want to tell the whole world that unlocked doors are not the problem, but that this culture of violence against women is the problem.

Our rally was a huge success, but was just a small step in breaking the silence about rape, sexual assault and violence against women. We have a long fight ahead of us.
