A college student has plenty of responsibilities, many of which are pretty boring and mundane. Now, doing laundry doesn't have to be one of those, thanks to a laundry service started by two Penn State students.
We Wash It, which began in the spring of 2000, is the brainchild of co-owners Adam Segalow (senior-telecommunications) and Jodi Frede (senior-management).
"We were sitting around thinking of ways that we could make money," Segalow said. "We knew that most people hated to do laundry, so we decided to start our own laundry service."
For $200 a semester, customers can have their laundry picked up at their home and returned washed, dried and folded, Segalow said. Since the semester is two weeks underway, Segalow and Frede have reduced the price to $175 for the rest of the semester. Another option is to pay 75 cents per pound, Segalow said.
We Wash It is operated out of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity house, 322 Fraternity Row, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The laundry is taken back to the house and is washed by the cooks that work at the fraternity for a cut of the profit, Segalow said.
The service doesn't get in the way of the day-to-day operation of the fraternity house, Segalow said, because the cooks do the laundry at night.
Carol Williams, one of the cooks who washes the laundry, became involved with the project after she heard Segalow talking about his plan for a business.
"I saw how hard (Frede and Segalow) worked at starting We Wash It, and I wanted to help them out," Williams said.
Williams said she is impressed at how far the business has progressed.
"I'm really proud of them," Williams said. "The owner of the Laundromat that I do the laundry at told me that he hears a lot of people talk about starting a laundry service, and not many actually follow through with it. He said that he was impressed that a service came this far."
Both Frede and Segalow believe their service can help students with time management.
"This frees up their time to do other things," Frede said.
After starting We Wash It, Segalow and Frede began an advertising campaign to get the word out.
"We put fliers in greek mailboxes and put ads in newspapers and on the radio," Segalow said.
Segalow and Frede modeled We Wash It after other college laundry services, such as one at Muhlenberg College in Allentown.
"We wanted to see how much to charge people for the service, so we checked other campus laundry services online," Frede said.
Amazingly, there haven't been any problems with any of the clients' laundry.
"It's really your fault if the laundry comes back shrunken," Segalow said. "We say on our advertisements that all of the laundry is washed, dried and folded."
So far, We Wash It has about 40 clients, Segalow said.
"We are happy with the number of contracts that we have now, but maybe we can expand in the future," Frede said. "At the rate this is going now, it is a possibility because there is market for this type of service."
Williams agrees with Frede's prediction.
"I definitely see room for growth," Williams said. "These kids really put a lot of effort into this business."
