Big Ten Conference officials announced yesterday that Penn State's Annie Zinkavich has been named field hockey Defensive Player of the Week. Zinkavich has notched over 114 minutes without giving up a goal.
Zinkavich had two solid performances this past weekend against Old Dominion and Kent State. The Lions lost 4-3 in their contest against Old Dominion but rebounded to beat Kent State 2-0. Zinkavich entered the ODU game with 9:20 left in the first half and did not give up a goal in over 44 minutes of playing time.
Her exceptional play earned her the starting goalkeeper position in Sunday's game against Kent State. Zinkavich played all 70 minutes and posted her first career shutout.
After two games Zinkavich is tied for the lead in the Big Ten is save percentage.
The Lady Lions return to action when they travel to St. Louis, Mo. for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Penn State plays at 1 p.m. Sunday against Virginia and 11 a.m. Monday against North Carolina.
