Campus postal service will not stop for lunch
The University Park office had to close at 11 a.m. when a worker resigned.

Students who have been puzzled by the mid-day closing of the on-campus post office will find postal service available during regular hours again today, though the lines might move bit little slower.

The office had been closed for the 11 a.m. hour because of the resignation of an employee who filled in for the post office staff during their lunch break, said Linda Bartraw, State College Postmaster.

Today, the two regular postal employees will be taking separate lunch breaks, rather than closing the office down, Bartraw explained.

"We were looking at alternatives to address the lunch break," Bartraw said. "We're trying to get the best service to the customer."

Some customers found any change disturbing to their class and work schedules.

"I don't have time to get down here at another part of the day," said Serge Kostyshyn (freshman-international business) as he looked at the sign.

"I have to mail something very urgent."

Others were disappointed after going out of their way or taking the time to stop and finding no service available.

"It's kind of a pain walking all the way back here later," said Jake Hillbery (junior-operating and information system management). "It's kind of pathetic that they have to close it all."

Though the postal service had hired another employee to replace the one who resigned, at this point they're not sure that they will send someone into the office to provide service in the future.

Closing the office for an hour was only one option for dealing with the break, Bartraw said.

Not sending the additional employee to the office has little to do with money, she added.

"We're looking at all of our locations. We're planning to open a location that will stay open until 9 at night," she said.

Yesterday students who needed help in mailing packages found a sign on the closed post office window above a stack of consumer service cards.

"Due to a local postal decision, this office will close each day from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Your comments are welcomed.

Please use the service cards provided. Thank you," the sign said.

Though Bartraw said a survey determined that the chosen hour was the least busy time, some students still found the closing to be inconvenient.
