Former Minnesota Golden Gopher stand-out Ben Gabler has joined the Penn State staff as the new assistant women's tennis coach. Gabler will join head coach Buffy Baker in guiding the Lady Lion tennis squad.
Gabler is a 1997 graduate of Minnesota and a former touring professional player. At UM, he started singles and doubles in all four of his years there. During his freshman and sophomore years, the Gophers won the Big Ten Championship and in 1996, his junior year, UM won the NCAA Region 8 title and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, with Gabler at No. 2 singles.
He was UM's No. 1 singles and doubles player as a senior and team captain as well. He left Minnesota with the fourth-best career record in Minnesota history, posting a 95-54 mark.
Gabler's accolades at Minnesota were numerous, including three straight All-Big Ten selections, the Big Ten Individual Champion runner-up ward and the Louis Ratner Award, given to the outstanding male athlete at Minnesota, showcasing commitment and accomplishment for the school.
As a touring pro, he traveled and played the entire world, including the U.S., Japan, and much of Europe.
