Young offense to head PSU men's soccer team; Lear only returning senior

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State men's soccer team will need to rely on underclassmen to score goals, as only one senior returns to the forward position.

Here is a look at the forwards for Penn State:

Nick Catanoso, 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, Cape May Ct. House (Wildwood Catholic) N.J.

Catanoso might play most of his minutes at the midfield position this season. He was an All-Region and All-State honoree as a senior in high school last season who will learn from the veterans in the midfield.

Benjamin Dame, 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, Munster (Annette-Von-Oroste-Hullshoff-Gymnasium) Germany

Dame is a freshman who might see minutes in the young frontline. With only one senior, no juniors and the rest sophomores and freshmen, Dame can see important minutes if he can contribute.

John Fisher, 5-foot-11, 150 pounds, Cochabamba (Cooperative) Bolivia

Fisher is a decorated Bolivian All-Star. Named Cochabamba Player of the Year as a junior, he was also the captain of the Under-17 Bolivian National Team who has a chance to help out the Lions' offense immediately.

Brett Forbrich, 6-foot-1, 173 pounds, Camp Hill (Cumberland Valley)

Only a sophomore, Forbrich is one of the most experienced forwards for the Lions. He scored two goals as a freshman and will be expected to add to those numbers if Penn State hopes to be successful.

Dale Jordan, 5-foot-10, 155 pounds, Dublin (Greenhills College) Ireland

Jordan was an explosive scorer on the high school and club level in Ireland, tallying more than 170 career goals while playing in Europe. Now, Jordan is a freshman who will bring his overseas experience to aid the Lions offensive attack.

Ken Lear, 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, Weston (St. Thomas Aquinas) Fla.

Lear is the lone senior at the forward position who has lettered every season he has been a Penn Stater, playing in 16 games as a junior.

Chris Roscher, 6-foot-0, 185 pounds, Easton (Freedom)

Roscher is a redshirt freshman who was an All-State and All-East selection in high school. He hasn't seen any college playing time because of his redshirt season, but is familar the system.

Nic Shahay, 5-foot-10, 155 lbs., Womelsdorf (Conrad Weiser)

Shahay is another freshman who can see some time if he plays well in the front. Penn State men's assistant soccer coach Kevin Doyle said he is expecting good things from him this season.

Darin Tranquillo, 5-foot-11, 170 lbs., Reading (Schuylkill Valley)

Tranquillo played in 12 games last season as a freshman, but will be called upon to step up his role this season. Again, only a sophomore, he is one of the more experienced players at the position. The coaching staff expects him to step into more of a leadership role.
