In addition to buying books and straightening out schedules, many students living off campus have found themselves with one more expense and hassle — purchasing cellular phone plans and being without telephone service.

Penn State's planners did not take the summer off. They put their pens to the drawing paper and sketched out the future of University Park's West Campus, the area opposite North Atherton Street from the Walker Building.

Freshmen, finally free from their parents and almost ready to start their college lives, follow the directions through the doors of The Bryce Jordan Center and walk down the stairs to their seats.

When thousands of freshmen stormed campus this weekend, 283 volunteer orientation leaders greeted them in the residence halls, ready to make the transition to college life a little smoother.

Students living in dorms with fast network connections find themselves able to download music off the Internet at a time when swapping MP3s comes under fire in the courts.

Although students have a lot to worry about at the beginning of a new year with moving in, new roommates and starting class, they should not allow their health to be ignored.

Carmen Finestra, executive producer and co-owner of Wind Dancer Production Group, has given Penn State's College of Communications $250,000 to renovate space and purchase new equipment to create the Carmen Finestra Digital Editing Laboratory, according to a Penn State press release.

Effective this semester, Douglas R. Cavener will head the department of biology within the Eberly College of Science.

The roster may have changed slightly, but the Penn State women's volleyball team still has title hopes.

One year after its second straight Big Ten title and first trip to the NCAA Women's College Cup Final Four, the Penn State women's soccer team is ready for action.

Last season, the Penn State men's soccer team had a goal to reach the Final Four. This year, that goal has turned into an expectation.

By her own account, the past few months have been relatively peaceful for Barbara Casey. That might sound surprising, given the media circus that has surrounded Rashard this summer.

While most people spent their August enjoying sunny days and beautiful vacations, the Penn State men's soccer team chose a different route.

Former Penn State basketball star Jarrett Stephens has signed a contract to play professionally in Italy. Stephens, who had signed a contract with the Vancouver Grizzlies, will forego any opportunities to play in the NBA this year.

Penn State has named Toby Simpson its new assistant men's tennis coach.

The Penn State Lady Lions basketball team will face several Top 10 teams again in the 2000-01 season in addition to its nationally competitive Big Ten opponents.

The Penn State women's swimming team was well represented at the recent U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis.

The Penn State Lady Icers are receiving resumes for a coach this season.

The group is scheduled to bring chart-topping music from its latest album to the Jordan Center on Sept. 24.

They say you can measure a sculpture's status by figuring out who vandalizes it. And when it comes to public art at University Park, not all prominent monuments are created equal.

With a CD or a concert for a canvas, the best musicians paint pictures through their songs. Bluesman T-Model Ford, who performs Sept. 11 at the Saloon, 101 Hiester St., is one of those artists who can pull this off.
