Today's University Park forecast
thunderstormsAs a cold front approaches from the upper Midwest today, expect afternoon showers and thunderstorms to develop, some of which could be severe. By tomorrow, high pressure behind the front will usher in cooler and less humid air, setting the stage for a very pleasant weekend. However, Monday will bring the threat of rain as another storm system affects our region.

Highlight

On this date in 1970, Hurricane Celia struck the coast of Texas, killing 11 people, injuring 466, and causing $454 million dollars in damage -- an amount equal to $ 1.8 billion in today’s dollars. However, the most notable characteristic of this storm was the fact that while Celia’s sustained winds were 130 mph, gusts were estimated to be as high as 180 mph. Few hurricanes have ever registered such a difference between sustained wind speeds and maximum wind gusts.
