HUB art galleries draw mixed opinions

For the Collegian

The HUB-Robeson galleries, located on the upper and lower levels of the HUB-Robeson Center, are one of the many additions to the newly renovated student center.

Since it was completed two years ago, the galleries have housed a variety of art mediums including paintings, sculptures, photography, ceramics and other types of crafts.

"We really do have a good representation from all areas of art," said Ann Shields, gallery head.

Many Penn State faculty members have been taking advantage of the galleries' collections by bringing their students to view the different exhibits.

"Faculty bring in their classes which is really nice," Shields said. "We've had more art classes come visit us this year than any other so far."

Fall Semester will hold many opportunities for students to learn more about the art exhibits being displayed. Shields plans to have more gallery talks where students can meet the artists and ask questions, she said.

There is the fear, however, of low student interest.

"I would hate to bring in artists and have no students come to support them," she said.

Individual student opinion on the art galleries is both positive and negative.

"I think it's a waste of space really," said Jonathan Lococo (sophomore-engineering). "An art gallery shouldn't be in a student center. They could have used the space for more offices."

Other students feel a better location for the art gallery might have boosted interest.

"It's out of the way really," said Rosemary Fehlner (junior-political science/ anthropology). "Most students don't walk by it."

Michelle Rathfon (freshman-earth science), who viewed the recent digital photography exhibit, thought more publicity for the gallery would bring more students.

"Maybe they could have artists come to the gallery and have live demonstrations. I think that would be interesting," Rathfon said.

The HUB Gallery, located on the top floor, displays the work of both students and professional artists.

Student artwork is displayed outside of the upper level gallery while the work of professional and emerging artists is inside the actual gallery. Students interested in having their work displayed should contact Shields.

Both galleries are open Tuesday through Thursday from 12 to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m.
