The Penn State World Campus received a $1 million grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. This is the third time the university's online learning initiative has received funds from the Sloan Foundation.

Deadly dorm fires that occurred nationwide last year spurred the introduction of legislation for sprinklers in residence halls across the state. But Penn State already is taking steps to insure fire safety on campus.

The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Information Technology at Penn State has been given palm handheld computers for each of its 74 scholars.

SPORTS

The Penn State field hockey team has announced its 2000 schedule, and it includes early season matchups with powerhouses Old Dominion, Virginia and North Carolina, as well as an always-competitive Big Ten lineup.

Sarah Duttera, a former four-time All-America swimmer for Penn State, has been named an assistant coach for the Lady Lions, head coach Bill Dorenkott said.
