Clinton to visit campus

For the Collegian

President Clinton plans to make his second visit to State College today.

But don't look for him to do any shopping downtown or mingling with the locals. His visit is only expected to last an hour and 45 minutes. Clinton's one scheduled stop is the National Governors' Association annual meeting.

Although itinerary changes are possible, Clinton will likely arrive at about 1:15 p.m. today at University Park Airport, according to a schedule issued by the White House.

He'll travel via motorcade to the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, where he'll speak to the governors at their afternoon plenary session, according to the schedule.

Security, already stepped-up for the safety of the governors, will notch even higher. Access will be limited to people wearing identification tags and everyone entering the room where the president plans to speak will have to pass through a metal detector.

According to the White House schedule, Clinton will motorcade back to the airport immediately afterward. He then plans to fly to Philadelphia.

The president's last visit to State College was in May 1996, when he gave a commencement speech at The Bryce Jordan Center.

Clinton, a former governor himself, has appeared at every NGA annual meeting since 1979, according to remarks he made at last year's meeting.
