Letter to the Editor
Retired professor thanks former student for tribute

I was deeply moved by the letter printed in the Collegian's June 27 issue from Chris Larkin, Class of 1995, scolding Penn State for my unnoticed retirement and the end of an undergraduate teaching internship program that I ran for more than thirty years during my tenure at Penn State.

One of Mr. Larkin's lovable traits is his literary skill.

He wrote a funny — if not always printable — informal guide to being a section leader, writing many truths about me that I would never have wanted to show the public.

I do need to point out that I chose to retire because I felt I could no longer teach and advise as well as I used to, needed more time to write, and wanted a less structured schedule.

Penn State did not force me out.

Graham Spanier said some kind words about my teaching to the Faculty Senate. Many members of his administration have talked to my section leaders.

The head of my department helped to subsidize the attendance of undergraduates at the event that Mr. Larkin described because it also featured small group meetings between students and people who have become established in professions that they hope to enter.

It is wonderful to feel appreciated, especially on a page of The Daily Collegian.

I will always treasure Chris Larkin's testimonial.

But I am also grateful to Penn State for having made it possible for me to work with so many wonderful students.
