NFL teams sign numerous Lions as free agents

In the days following the NFL Draft, several Penn State football players signed NFL contracts as free agents for the upcoming season.

Some of the standouts include former Penn State quarterback Kevin Thompson, who signed with the Cleveland Browns.

Another Penn State defensive player who was expected to go in the draft was free safety Askari Adams. Though Adams was not drafted, he will be given the opportunity to make the Buffalo Bills roster as he signed with them yesterday.

Former offensive lineman John Blick agreed to a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The terms of his contract were not to be disclosed. Blick, however, will be the first Penn State player to go to camp as he leaves for Florida today.

Several mini camps for rookies open in the next few weeks, but Blick will arrive in Tampa today to participate in a three-day workout camp to begin his process with the Bucs.

Blick said Tampa Bay offensive line coach Chris Foerster is pleased with the potential he brings to the table. However, Blick is remaining reserved and not jumping to conclusions.

"All I'm going to do is go out there and try my best," he said.

Thompson will reunite with former Penn State teammates as he and former Nittany Lions kicker Travis Forney signed free-agent deals with the Browns. This marks the second and third Penn State players picked up by Cleveland, as former Lions defensive end Courtney Brown was selected No. 1 during Saturday's draft.

Penn State assistant head coach Fran Ganter couldn't be happier with his former players.

"It is great to see these guys get a shot," Ganter said.

While Thompson was unavailable for comment, an enthusiastic Forney was pleased with the way things have worked out.

"The more and more I think about it, the more excited I get," he said. "Cleveland called me during the draft and told me that they had interest in me as a free agent. So that made things easier to watch."

Forney, who led the Lions with 107 points last season, rarely missed as he nailed 21 out 26 field goal attempts and was perfect in extra-point tries.

Forney arrived at Penn State with Brown four years ago and said the transition to the NFL will be easier since the duo already knows a few of the players in Cleveland.

"It will be great to play with Courtney," Forney said, "he is such a great player."

Cleveland went 2-14 last season as an expansion team. But the squad has a solid quarterback in second-year starter Tim Couch and a rising star at receiver in Kevin Johnson. Together, that pair could bring some excitement to this year's team.

Unlike Blick, Forney will start camp in a couple of weeks.

He said there are a few different camps he will attend before summer camp officially kicks off in early August. Forney inked a two-year deal worth the league minimum, but his contract is based on incentives and bonuses that can only make the former Lions kicker work harder. "I just love kicking footballs," Forney said.

Other notable Lions signing on are Eric Cole, who will team with LaVar Arrington in Washington, David Fleischauer (Cincinnati Bengals), Derek Fox (St. Louis Rams) and Cordell Mitchell, who became yet another former Lion to sign on with the New York Giants.
