Festival-goers enjoy atmosphere
Thousands of people crowded the streets yesterday as the 33rd Annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts moved into full swing before weekend crowds began to arrive in State College.

Police gear up for weekend
When walking down the streets and sidewalks of State College this weekend, people can expect to find plenty of beautiful artwork and tasty food -- and police officers.

  • New visitors' center plans receive boost
    After retiring on June 29, William McKinnon, former senior associate vice president for finance and business, said he is planning to finish work on the new visitors' center and will work on it until its completion.

    At the ole ballgame
    This April marked the inaugural season for the Altoona Curve, the Eastern League AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the coming of the new team a sense of excitement for baseball has exploded throughout Altoona and surrounding communities.

    Gymmen coach named to Pan-American Games
    On Tuesday, Randy Jepson was named the assistant coach of the U.S. Men's Gymnastics Team for the 1999 Pan American Games, July 24-27 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jepson, the Nittany Lions head coach since 1992, was selected by the U.S. men's gymnastics committee based on his ability as a coach and prior involvement with the U.S. Team.

    Trackwoman to compete at Junior Pan-Am Games
    Penn State thrower Deshaya Williams competes tomorrow in the discus at the 1999 Junior Pan American Games in Tampa, Fla. Williams earned the chance to compete in the Pan-Am Games by winning the discus event at the 1999 Junoior USA Track and Field National Championships, June 19-20.

    Two Penn State students have started a business from within their fraternity house's walls. Tom Nicchi and Carl Hintz are the founders of Vegas-Hintz Entertainment, a new State College concert-promoting business.

    'Affliction,' 'Raging Bull' offer realistic view of domestic violence
    This week's new release is "Affliction," an interesting, if not uplifting, movie about a murder mystery and the downfall of a cop in a small New Hampshire town. For my recommended movie of the week, I picked "Raging Bull," one of the truly unique movies of the past 25 years.

    112 to open for Whitney Houston
    The Atlanta-based, hip-hop foursome 112 will open for Whitney Houston when she performs at The Bryce Jordan Center this month, according to a press release from the Jordan Center. The July 18 concert will feature singers Slim, Daron Jones, Q and Michael of 112.
