Students stay for summer fun
Penn State is up and running again. Many students chose to spend their summers in State College, taking classes, getting acquainted with campus and hanging out with new friends.

Summer brings construction
Traffic in State College and University Park has been complicated since the end of Spring Semester by the construction involving two major arteries in and out of the area -- College Avenue and Burrowes Street.

Council extends meter hours
The State College Borough Council passed an ordinance Monday night extending an experiment that will enforce downtown parking meters until 2 a.m. The council voted to increase the trial period from 90 days to six months.

Drug ring suspects await trial
This summer Bellefonte could be the site of the defendants' trial in the alleged State College cocaine ring.

Board approves new construction, appointments
The following actions took place at the Penn State Board of Trustees meeting in May:

Student dies of pneumonia
Bronchopneumonia was the cause of death of a Penn State student in March, according to lab and autopsy reports released last month.

PSU continues cleanup
The cleanup of contaminated soil discovered in 1997 at a fire training site near Penn State continues.

Interim dean appointed at Penn State Altoona
Robert N. Pangborn was named the interim dean of Penn State Altoona, effective July 1, replacing Dean Allen Meadors, who accepted a position as chancellor at University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

College of Business receives donation
Penn State's Smeal College of Business Administration received a $5 million gift from John D. and Bette Garber of Palm Desert, Calif.

Former dean dies
Former Penn State College of Medicine dean Dr. Harry Prystowsky died May 20. He was 74 years old.

Lions lose Vanzant
Penn State officials announced yesterday that women's basketball player Shawnta Vanzant has decided to leave school because she was declared academically ineligible to play next season.

NCAA Tourney dreams a nightmare for laxers
Going into the team's final game on May 1 with No. 4 Duke, the No. 9 Penn State men's lacrosse team was looking to change something about itself -- it's nonexistent postseason record.

Track teams send eight to nationals
Eight athletes from the Penn State men's and women's track teams competed in the NCAA Championship meet June 2-5 at Boise State in Idaho, where four Lions earned All-American honors for their performances.
