    Die hard
In its bright red uniforms, Indiana (21-6, 1-3 Big Ten) kicked off its Big Ten season with the Penn State Nittany Lions (15-9, 3-1), who struggled with lowly teams such as Bucknell and C.W. Post last week, in a four-game series at Beaver Field.

Schiller gunning for playoffs in final season
To see Chris Schiller play is one thing. To write about it, another. It is hard to put into words how he glides above the terrain so gracefully.

Spikers split versus Springfield, Ball State
The No. 11 Nittany Lions (16-12) split the pair of matches, knocking off Springfield (15-4, 16-14, 10-15, 15-5) in an emotional match, but falling to Ball State (15-10, 14-16, 12-15, 7-15) in four games.

    Paterno's view of Prop 16
Last week a federal judge gave new meaning to "March Madness" when he overturned the National Collegiate Athletic Association's minimum testscore requirements for athletes. According to Judge Ronald L. Buckwalter, these rules violate the civil rights of African-Americans, who fare worse on these tests than white students do. Some college coaches welcomed the judge's decision, but I'm very concerned about what will happen if we eliminate basic academic standards for athletes.

Laxers slay scoring woes versus Black Knights
After scoring one goal in Penn State's 20-10 loss at the hands of Georgetown last Wednesday, the Penn State attacker came out determined to end his scoring woes in the No. 9 Nittany Lions' game against No. 16 Army Saturday.

    Killing them slowly
Coming into this weekend's trio of matches against No. 20 Iowa, the coach of the Penn State softball team thought it would have been a "little presumptuous" to think her unranked Lady Lions squad could upset the mighty Hawkeyes.
