Waive goodbye
McQueary placed on waivers in NFL Europe

By JORDAN HYMAN

Two weeks ago when Mike McQueary said he was more concerned with making the roster of the NFL Europe League's Scottish Claymores than playing time itself, he was correct in prioritizing his concerns.

Yesterday, the Claymores waived McQueary just three weeks into the team's training camp in Orlando, Fla. The former Nittany Lions quarterback had been allocated by the NFL's Oakland Raiders, the same team that cut him during last summer's training camp.

McQueary also had been competing for the Claymores' starting job with former Auburn quarterback Dameyune Craig, and McQueary's release obviously means Craig will get the nod.

Two weeks ago from his hotel in Orlando, where he was coincidentally sharing a room with Craig, McQueary was unsure of how the quarterback competition would shape up.

"Right now it's a pretty good setup. We have two guys who can throw the ball pretty well . . . it's kind of tough to tell. It's one of those things that's gonna have to work itself out," said McQueary, who threw for 2,211 yards and 17 touchdowns in his lone year as a Penn State starter in 1997.

"He's a good guy. We talk about Auburn in the SEC and Penn State in the Big Ten and which is better."

McQueary also had said he was getting an opportunity to take sufficient reps in Orlando, but was concerned his inexperience in actual game situations might be his Achilles' heel.

"I only got the one year to play at Penn State and I didn't get to play a lot before that," McQueary said. "That's what I'm kind of lacking in."

The quarterback's waiving leaves defensive tackle Brandon Noble of the Barcelona Dragons as the only former Penn Stater on an NFL Europe roster.

The NFL developmental league begins its 10-week schedule April 17.
