Golf course discussions continue
The State College Planning Commission continued discussions on the possibility of building on or around the Penn State Golf Courses, 1523 W. College Ave., at its meeting last night. After debating several White Course development alternatives, the majority of the commission agreed to recommend a modified option permitting necessary structures, such as drinking fountain stations and shelters, on the land to the State College Borough Council for its consideration. Before the decision, Penn State architect Charles Brueggebors said future plans for open spaces on campus limit the amount of land available for growth. Penn State does not plan to build extensively on the golf course, he said. However, Brueggebors did add that part of the land along Atherton Street could be a "safety valve" for growth if other land is not available, he said. Several commission members stressed preserving the open spaces of the golf course area because of the White Course's historical significance and the view of natural landmarks such as Tussey Mountain in Boalsburg. --by Kelly Bradish
