Lady laxers face tough weekend in Virginia

The Penn State women's lacrosse team had a rocky weekend of competition, as it split two contests in Virginia.

The Lady Lions (4-2) were upset by No. 3 Virginia yesterday, 15-5. The Cavaliers (4-2) were coming off a tough 9-8 loss against Princeton Saturday and took out their frustrations on Penn State.

After jumping out to an early 2-1 lead, Virginia broke the game open with nine consecutive goals and held the Lions scoreless for 40:33.

The Cavaliers didn't let up in the second half, scoring nine goals to Penn State's three.

Virginia was led by Jamie Hass, who started her first collegiate game and tallied four goals. Senior tri-captain Jess Hull also scored four goals for the Cavaliers.

The Lions were led by senior Jen Johnson, who tallied two goals.

Penn State also received goals from seniors Colleen O'Brien, Emily Mechem and freshman Molly Ford.

"Virginia was so psyched to play and Penn State wasn't," Penn State coach Julie Williams said in a press release. "We just didn't have it and they did."

In Saturday's game, the Lions staved off a late run by William & Mary and held on to an 11-10 victory. Junior attacker Christine Kenney, led the way with four goals, including the game-clincher with seconds remaining.

Entering yesterday's game, Kenney scored eight goals in the past two games.

The Lions took a 7-4 lead into halftime, but the Tribe battled back to take a 9-8 lead with 6:27 remaining.

O'Brien scored to tie and Kenney scored the next two to put the Lions up for good.

Penn State's next game is 3:30 p.m. Friday at Princeton.
