Pride and joy
By ALEXANDRA RODRIGUEZ
Between applauds and cheers, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and ally community at Penn State celebrated their diverse identities at the 14th annual Pride Week rally Friday in front of Old Main. With tears in their eyes, Jim Osborne and Romaine Patterson, of Laramie, Wyo., spoke about their friend Matthew Shepard. They described how Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student brutally killed in a hate crime, wanted to touch people's lives and change views about the LGBT community. "Hopefully, through change, we will not have to pay the price that Matthew paid," Patterson said to the crowd of about 75 students. | ||||

Undergraduate Student Government President Caroline Casagrande, the first speaker to address the crowd, said LGBT issues are not about politics or morality. "These causes are about humanity and most importantly they are about love," Casagrande said. "And to quote the Beatles, that's all we need." Steve McCann, Pride Week co-chair, accompanied by his mother, Kathleen McCann, of Eagleville, spoke after Casagrande. "(As) the millennium approaches, never again will we hear words like 'fag' or 'dyke' without being confronted," McCann said. "We won't accept discrimination." McCann told the crowd about being a scared freshman, knowing he was the only one aware of his sexuality. Now as a senior, he said his friends and family know about his sexuality and love him anyway. "I don't love him despite the fact that he's gay, but I love him because he's gay," Kathleen McCann said. "(Children) don't have to be the way you want them to be, but they have to be the way the are." Complementing Kathleen McCann's words, Greg Harbaugh, Lutheran campus pastor, discussed the relationship between homosexuality and religion. He added nothing immoral exists about homosexual behavior in response to the daily comments made by Gary Cattell, the Willard preacher. "In the gospel, it says absolutely nothing (about homosexuality)," he said. "Jesus says love one another, love your neighbor and love your enemies."
