Four ska bands light up Crowbar stage

After deciding another Tuesday night at Player's would be blah, I opted to check out some live music -- four ska bands that performed for $5 at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave., that evening.

From the performances of Skoidats, Antix, No On 15 and Slick Olde Bishops, I have concluded one thing about ska bands. Some say all ska bands sound the same, but they're wrong. Each band at Crowbar had its own unique style.

First up was Slick Olde Bishops, a band from Pittsburgh. The bassist played both electric and upright bass. The Bishops' sound was swing-ska, but one band member said he thought swing has been too played out.

Most people came to support the local band No On 15, and the support seemed to energize the band. The band had a punk edge that was accented by the horn section. The band members played songs from their album on local indie label Jump Start Records.

No On 15 proved to be adept at audience interaction. When intoxicated people yelled criticisms, band members fired back with even more clever remarks.

Eventually singer Joey Lenze (senior-engineering science) said, "Well, you don't have a microphone."

The crowd became considerably smaller for the next band, Antix.

Having both tenor and baritone saxophones brought the brass sound to the forefront.

The singer's voice was low and gritty, and occasional yelling was involved.

Antix ended on a humorous note, making fun of bad hardcore bands by barking nonsense lyrics into microphones while playing fast-paced distorted guitar lines.

Skoidats was the last band to perform. Their sound was more instrumental and punk at times.

The band members admitted they were drinking in honor of St. Patrick's Day, and although the alcohol may have handicapped their performance, they still produced a great show.
