Students looking for a little relaxation may find it listening to Piedmont blues musicians Cephas & Wiggins at 10 p.m. tomorrow in the HUB Gallery Lounge.
John Cephas and Phil Wiggins form an acoustic guitar and harmonica duo that has contributed to a country blues revival in the United States.
The duo was awarded two W.C. Handy Awards (the "Grammy of the blues community") in 1987 for its first domestic album "Dog Days of August" and named "Blues Entertainers of the Year." Cephas also won the National Heritage Fellowship Award or Living Treasure Award in 1989 from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Cephas & Wiggins' sound, which the Chicago Tribune described as "down-home, traditional country blues delivered with feeling," is captured on the duo's latest album, COOL DOWN -- a mixture of six original songs and cover songs of legendary blues artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson and Merle Travis.
