Hammond Building
The University Park Campus Master Plan proposal calls for a campus that is more welcoming to visitors. One step in that direction is avoiding tall, flat buildings pressed against the boundaries of the campus. Spanning two blocks, Hammond towers over College Avenue with no entrances facing the town. It sports three stories of brick-colored paneling popular when the building was built in the 1960s. "At the time, I guess it was the right thing to do," said university architect Charles Brueggebors. But in addition to having a dated look by today's standards, the low height between stories makes it difficult to install up-to-date utilities in the building, Brueggebors said. The Master Plan suggests Hammond be cut in half and renovated, if not demolished and rebuilt, to help visually link the town and the campus.
