USG not credible to promote alcohol issues

In a response to the Collegian Board of Opinion editorial in the Collegian Monday, Undergraduate Student Government Vice President Brian Olivo and USG Senator James Hornick listed the wonderful contributions that our student government has made to enhancing students’ knowledge of the dire consequences of drinking alcohol.

Alcohol awareness is a great thing. Just go to Findlay Commons and look at all the posters our tuition is paying for. But leaving aside the issue of whether the promotion of alcohol awareness is really the university’s job, I would like to pose the question to USG: Have you ever stopped to ask yourselves whether you have any credibility to lecture Penn State students about alcohol?

Who gave you the authority? Certainly not your conduct. I don’t think the university will ever forget the infamous alcoholic USG social last semester, which many members of USG attended. These same members are now concerned with Penn State’s drinking habits. And let’s face it, a lecture on alcohol from a fraternity member is pretty silly, people.

I have no use for the token efforts that these two USG members listed in their letter. Instead, I’d like to see a list of how James Hornick, Brian Olivo and all the other members of USG have changed their personal consumption of alcohol. Only then, from this student’s standpoint, will USG’s credibility be restored.
