Run for USG
Those not satisfied with USG, should run for an elected office

So, you've seen the workings of the Undergraduate Student Government this year. It's been covered in the pages of The Daily Collegian during good times and bad times.

They've attempted to make drastic changes to the Loop, and they've said they are going to improve student services at University Health Services.

They've had three different USG Senate presidents, pre-meeting socials where alcohol was served and a computer scandal.

We just have one question for you, the reader: Are you satisfied with what USG has done for you?

If you're not, The Daily Collegian Board of Opinion urges you to pick up an application for a position within USG. This is the time where you can make a direct change in your representation. Packets are available in 203 HUB for those interested in a position as USG president, vice president or senator. The packets are due March 14.

Students also will be electing representatives for the University Park Allocations Committee. UPAC is responsible for allocating our student activity fee and other funds to students and student organizations. UPAC elections packets will be available Thursday in 225 HUB, and they are due by 5 p.m. March 16.

In addition, the Association of Residence Hall Students will hold elections for area representatives and officers. ARHS is responsible for representing on-campus students and improving the atmosphere of on-campus living. Students who live in the dorms are eligible for membership in ARHS. These elections packets are available in 212 HUB and are due by 5 p.m. March 17.

However, if you want to run for office simply to build up a résumé, here's one word of advice: don't. Students know who isn't working in their best interest, and you'll be getting yourself into a lot of hard work that you may not want or expect.

Penn State students need leaders who are willing to stand up in front of the Penn State Board of Trustees and administration and speak for the students. We need people who are willing to tell administrators when students are not receiving fair treatment and when Penn State is not acting in the interest of education.

If you think you can do such a job, run for office. Even if you've never done anything with USG or any other executive organization, give it a shot -- you may just know best what the average student wants.
