Golfers place 18th at Puerto Rico Classic
The Penn State men's golf team finished 18th at the Puerto Rico Classic, which took place Sunday through Tuesday at the Rio Mar Country Club in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The 54-hole tournament that annually fields many of the nation's best teams did not disappoint again this year as it hosted five teams from the top 10. Despite the talented field, the course proved to be a tough early season challenge for the teams, as only five finished under par. Clemson won the tournament with a 34-under-par score of 830. The Tigers were led by John Engler (three-day total 205), who gained a share of the individual title with David Christenson of East Tennessee State by shooting a tournament-low 65 in the final round. Georgia Tech (832) finished second, just two strokes back at 32 under par. Three Yellow Jackets finished in the top 10. Andy Latowski, who finished in 58th place overall by shooting a 228, led the Nittany Lions. Rounding out the Penn State lineup were Greg Marshalek (234), Matt Abbott (234), Josh Dawes (237) and Mike Saporito (240). Minnesota and Northwestern made strong showings for the Big Ten by finishing eighth and ninth, respectively. -- by Anthony Miller
