College of Communications' student council reorganizes

By AKI JEAN MUNNELL

To involve more students, the College of Communications' student council is reorganizing the way it fulfills its goals, beginning with a collegewide election for the new officers.

An application, nomination and campaigning process will take place in the next two months with elections March 18 and 19. The new council will consist of a president, four vice presidents and four different committees.

Committees will help accomplish council goals by creating more diverse ideals, said Deleela Jones, outgoing student council vice president.

"There will be a delegation of responsibility," said Ellyn Exley, outgoing student council president. "We will get more done."

In addition to committees, presidents from different student organizations will take part in roundtable sessions.

At these sessions, different groups can voice opinions and concerns about the college. The roundtable committee will report to the student council's student organization liaison, who will tell the president about student concerns.

In previous years, the student council was a group of presidents from various organizations.

It was inefficient because the focus was on groups the presidents were already members of, Exley said.

"The new student council will be more democratic," she said. "It's ironic that we are the College of Communications, and we didn't communicate."

The new officers will rewrite a constitution, which must be approved by the college before it can be presented to the Undergraduate Student Government. If it is accepted by USG, the student council will gain USG status, which will entitle it to university recognition, University Park Allocation Committee funds and other benefits.

"I think everyone in the college should attend the meetings because it will give them an idea of what's going on," Kristy McMullin (junior-journalism) said.

General meetings will be open to anyone enrolled in the college.
