My Opinion
'What if?' Cagers' unlucky season leaving fans asking that question

Craig Kackenmeister bio is a senior majoring in journalism and a Collegian men's basketball writer.
In case no one noticed, the Penn State men's basketball team dropped its sixth straight game Wednesday night and is now 2-10 in its last 12 games.

Following yet another defeat, my basketball colleagues and I found ourselves asking the question: What if Golden Gophers standout guard Quincy Lewis had missed his game-winning shot and the Nittany Lions had come down the court and nailed a jumper to finally end the streak?

It seems like a year ago when the Lions pulled off an early season upset over then-No. 10 Temple with a last-second shot in the lane by guard Joe Crispin for a 65-64 victory. The Lions proved that upset wasn't a fluke when they went on to beat Villanova and Penn.

But since entering Big Ten play the tables have turned and the Lions have been forced to swallow last-second losses.

The slide started back on Jan. 13 when the Lions lost a heartbreaker to then-No. 19 Wisconsin, 61-58. After the game the Lions were down but realized there still were a lot of games left, especially on their home court. Next came a 62-60 overtime loss at Northwestern, then two weeks later another overtime loss to Indiana, then a final-second loss to Michigan State.

It seems every step the Lions have taken had an opposite, more-positive ending sitting just a few points out of reach. That in mind, here's my retracing of some of those steps in this what-could-have-been campaign for the Lions.

  • What if Lions forward Jarrett Stephens hadn't been creamed in last year's NIT semifinal game, hadn't torn an anterior cruciate ligament and wasn't currently sitting on the bench in street clothes taking a redshirt season? Stephens averaged 14.4 points per game last season in Big Ten play. Forward Gyasi Cline-Heard stepped into the starting role this season when Stephens made the decision to sit out. Overall, Cline-Heard is averaging 8.8 points per game in conference play. Would the extra six points Stephens averaged last season have made a difference in the close games?

  • What if the Lions had more depth on the bench? So far this season the bench players are averaging a combined 8.5 points per game, with sophomore guard Greg Grays leading the way with 5.4 points per game. In the Lions' 73-63 loss to Wisconsin on the road, the Badgers' bench outscored Penn State's 41-13 -- all 13 points came from Grays.

  • What if Indiana guard A.J. Guyton's 3-point bomb in the end of the second overtime hit the front end of the rim and the Lions got another shot to win the game? Surprisingly, Hoosiers coach Bob Knight didn't think Guyton's shot had a chance, saying he thought the ball got caught up in a wind current. Whoosh. Another heartbreaker.

  • What if in the rematch against Northwestern at The Bryce Jordan Center, Lions center Calvin Booth didn't foul out of the game allowing Wildcats phenom Evan Eschmeyer to take advantage of the smaller Carl Jackson to carry Northwestern to a 71-67 victory?

  • What if Michigan State guard Mateen Cleaves actually missed the shot? He instead hit an off-balanced shot in the lane that gave the Spartans a 70-68 victory.

It seems the "What if?" question has been asked numerous times this season by fans, media, coaches and players.

Booth may have best summed the endless frustration of the Lions with a simple statement after the loss against Minnesota. "I don't have anything to say," Booth said, "but I'm tired of losing."

    Here's one more for you.

  • What if the Lions go to the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago and somehow make it through the tough bracket, win the tournament and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament?

    What if I'm nuts?
