Pavlik earns 100th as spikers top ESU
By JOSH DAECHE
Finally the Nittany Lions have a winning streak. The No. 14 Penn State men's volleyball team (4-8, 2-0 EIVA) celebrated its first back-to-back victories of the season last night, knocking off East Stroudsburg in three games (15-6, 15-4, 15-6). The win gave coach Mark Pavlik the 100th win of his Penn State career. It was a win he down played. "It felt no different than winning the other 99," Pavlik said. "We just have to go from here." Last night, Pavlik switched up the starting lineup by starting switch hitter Scott Lapp over regular starter Eric Houston. Lapp, who came off the bench last weekend against Princeton and Juniata, passed and blocked well during the two matches. | ||||

Last night, the Lions saw production from their bench. "Everybody played well tonight," Pavlik said. "Eric came in and played a good second game and Brad (Miller) served the ball really well." Penn State was led by opposite hitter Jason Hawkins, who had a team-high 10 kills. East Stroudsburg's downfall was turning the ball over, and the Lions made them pay. "We benefited from their hitting errors tonight," Pavlik said. Miller hopes Penn State's strong performance in last night's match will pay dividends when the Lions play this weekend. "I think we have to play at the same level of emotion we have in the games we've played well in," Miller said. "When we get down by a few points we have to keep the emotion level up and keep the streaks alive." Miller said Penn State saw strong performances from Dan Schall and Adam Whitescarver, who had a match-high five blocks, -- three which were solo. He also earned a red card for his emotional effort. This weekend, Penn State will travel to Rutgers-Newark to participate in the Golden Dome Classic. The Lions play No. 10 Loyola-Chicago at 5:30 tonight and No. 8 Ohio State at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The Lions played the Buckeyes earlier this season at home, with Penn State losing all three games. Penn State has faced eight ranked opponents this season, losing to all of them. Pavlik likes Penn State's chances going into this weekend. "Loyola is a very well coached team," he said. "We're figuring out our offense and we're blocking better."
