Lady cager setting records

By DONNIE COLLINSbio

Members of the No. 15 Penn State women's basketball team are starting to form a habit of attaining lofty honors.

This week, it was Andrea Garner's turn to do just that.

For the second time this season, Garner captured Big Ten Player of the Week honors for her efforts this past weekend against conference foes Wisconsin and Northwestern. The 6-foot-3 center poured in 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds en route to earning her 10th double-double of the season Friday in the Lady Lions' 73-71 victory over the Badgers.

It may, however, have been her performance Sunday against Northwestern that clinched the honor for Garner.

After sinking a jump shot with 4:48 to play in the second half, Garner became just the 20th player in school history to attain the 1,000-point plateau. She finished the game against the Wildcats with 10 points and a game-high seven boards.

The 1,000-point honor, however, isn't the only milestone Garner might attain this season. With three games remaining in the regular season and at least one Big Ten Tournament contest to play, Garner stands 40 rebounds away from the 700 mark for her career. She also needs just four more blocked shots to achieve 100.

TV Land

Speaking of milestones, both of Penn State's games at The Bryce Jordan Center this weekend -- against No. 2 Purdue Friday and conference cellar dweller Minnesota on Sunday -- will be televised.

The game with Minnesota will be the 100th Penn State women's game broadcast over the television airwaves this decade.

Penn State has achieved marked success in the 98 games aired thus far in the 90s. Despite the Lions' less-than-remarkable 7-8 record on national television, the team has recorded an impressive 66-32 overall record when it appears on the little screen.

The Lions have appeared most often on regional television -- a whopping 71 times. They have a 51-20 record in those games.

Movin' on up

Penn State climbed three spots in the latest Associated Press women's college basketball poll this week, setting up camp at No. 15.

Although the top six teams in this week's poll held ground from last week, there was enough shuffling throughout the remainder of the rankings to make a Las Vegas blackjack dealer envious.

The biggest losers ended up being UCLA, which plummeted five spots from No. 7 to No. 12. Alabama came close to matching the Bruins' futility, dropping four spots -- and nearly out of the top 25 -- from No. 21 to No. 25.

No. 1 Tennessee claimed all but one of the 42 first-place votes, with the other going to the Boilermakers. Louisiana Tech, Connecticut, Colorado State and Notre Dame round out the top six.
