Iowa's repeat denies swimwomen revenge
By JENNIFER BARTOLINI
The chance to settle a score was not enough motivation for the Penn State women's swimming and diving team to pull off a victory. The Lady Lions (4-4, 2-3 Big Ten) were looking to avenge a nine-point loss to Iowa (8-4) at the Big Ten Championships last February, but fell just short in losing 131-112 to the Hawkeyes Saturday at Iowa's Fieldhouse Pool. It was the final dual meet for both teams as they head into two off weeks before this year's Big Ten Championships, Feb. 18-20 at Minnesota. | ||||

Despite the loss, Penn State junior diver Jaime Jaax managed to finish her Big Ten dual meet season undefeated. She won the one-meter boards scoring 250.45 points and the three-meter competition with 275.80 points. Penn State diving coach Craig Brown said the team looked good considering the tough competition of Iowa, one of the top diving programs in the country. Penn State's Katie Anderson, last week's Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, once again won the 500- and 1,000-meter freestyles. She too is undefeated in those events in Big Ten competition this season. Anderson finished second in the 200-meter butterfly. While she was pleased with her performances, she said there are things she has to work on before Big Tens. "As for myself I swam pretty good," she said. "My times were a little off. Now I know what I need to work on." Second-place finishes were put on the books by senior Lesley Spada in the 200-meter backstroke and by junior Tasha Kulka in the 50-meter freestyle. The Lions generated more points by winning the 200-meter freestyle relay. Senior co-captain Arianne Adams said the team's performance was definitely better than last week's against Northwestern. She finished first in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:51.44. In the 100-meter freestyle, Adams came in less than a tenth of a second behind the first-place winner, Iowa's Stacey Wertz. Adams said the team just fell behind in points and the Hawkeyes out-swam it in the end. The losses to Big Ten competitors Northwestern and Iowa to finish out the Lions' season could have an impact on their attitudes going into final preparation for Big Tens. Adams said most of the team is thinking about how it swam in these last two meets and what can be done to improve. She is hoping this year's competition will be a reversal from what happened last year. "Last year we beat Iowa in the dual meet and they beat us at Big Tens," she said. "This year we lost to them in the dual meet, so it's our turn to beat them at Big Tens."
