The Council of Commonwealth Student Governments has learned the hard way the importance of having the right leaders at the helm of an organization.

Almost two weeks ago, CCSG impeached President John Baer Vice President Charles Stevens at an emergency meeting.

Council members noted that they felt the two leaders were not fulfilling their campaign goals and that they were not communicating well with other campuses. So council members did what they thought was best and impeached their leaders.

The importance of having good leadership of the Commonwealth Campus students is paramount. The CCSG president and vice president are the primary representatives of the Commonwealth Campuses at University Park. The president is responsible for voicing student concerns to administrators, the Penn State Board of Trustees and others.

And the CCSG president and vice president get money from Penn State for their jobs -- if they aren't doing the jobs effectively, Penn State's money goes to waste.

That's why CCSG needs to move on from this impeachment and learn how important it is to seriously think about who they elect to the top two positions.

Unfortunately, problems such as these have plagued this executive organization for a while, and it may be difficult to come together to complete the 1998-99 academic year on a positive note. Hopefully, though, the leaders who make up CCSG will put the controversy behind them and work on other issues affecting students at Commonwealth Campuses.

The new president and vice president, Jon-Michael Roman and Mike D'Ausilio, respectively, hopefully will pull what's left of this year into an uplifting time for CCSG. They should set new and continuing goals for improving Commonwealth Campuses -- such as better use of the student activity fee, increase in student services and motivation for the CCSG staff and SGA leaders from around the state.

It's going to be a tough job to start anew at this point in the year, but the new CCSG president and vice president must put turmoil behind them and work for the students.
