A strengthening low pressure system over the central Plains will continue to draw warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico into our area. Tonight, strong southerly winds will develop over the region and erode the cold air currently in place. Heavier showers and possibly a rumble of thunder will accompany the milder air on Saturday, before winter returns for the start of next week.

Weather Highlight
Tornadoes in January? For the second time this week, an outbreak of tornadoes has occurred in the Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys. A fast flow of air aloft, known as a jet streak, helped in clashing warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico with a cold, Canadian airmass to the northwest, making the conditions ripe for tornadoes.
