Matt Calabretta left the Penn State wrestling room on crutches Wednesday with his right shoe off and his head down.
Just a few moments earlier, he was on his back grimacing and yelling out in pain. Calabretta's hands covered his eyes as medical personnel attended to his ankle and Nittany Lion coach Troy Sunderland consulted him.
Yesterday morning, the Lion heavyweight starter was X-rayed and diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain. He will miss at least two weeks of competition, including the Lions' dual meets with Ohio State and Iowa this weekend.
This injury is especially devastating for Calabretta as he has missed the last seasons with knee injuries -- knees that have been operated on three times.
Mark Janus may make a return to the starting slot (he also has been sidelined with an ankle injury) this weekend. But if he is unable to return, redshirt sophomore Rick Bolinsky may get the nod.
Last season, Janus played a pivotal role in the Lions' victory over the Hawkeyes with a pin on then-No. 8 Wes Hand in three minutes and 23 seconds.
Also, the 165-pound slot is still uncertain. Alex Leykikh has been sidelined with a hyper-extended elbow. In his place, Kevin Vile or Dana Weber may start.
A decision on who starts at heavyweight or 165 pounds may not be made until moments before each meet.
