Multi-instrumentalist visits HUB
Music legend Makanda Ken McIntyre will jazz up the HUB Gallery Lounge with his multi-instrument performance at 10 p.m. tomorrow. Best known for his versatility, McIntyre plays 17 instruments, including the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, flute, clarinet, oboe, English horn, bassoon, piano, bass and drums. A composer as well as a multi-instrumentalist, McIntyre's work has been characterized as avant-garde with ties to spiritual, blues, swing, calypso and bebop. In the early 1960s, McIntyre worked and recorded with Eric Dolphy, Cecil Taylor and Beaver Harris. Recently retired as professor and director of African-American music and dance at the State University of New York College at Old Westbury, McIntyre has returned to performing and recording his compositions. He continues to teach an ensemble course at the New School in New York City, and has been credited with contributing to the modern jazz renaissance in Harlem with his weekly performances at the Lickety Split Jazz Club. --by Jaimee Abbott
