Weather Highlight

The difference between sleet and freezing rain is often misunderstood. Sleet occurs when snow formed in the cloud melts as it falls into a warm layer above the surface. This rain then refreezes into tiny ice pellets as it passes into subfreezing air before striking the surface. Freezing rain, on the other hand, falls from the cloud entirely as liquid, but freezes on contact with a below freezing surface.
