Student-athletes earn academic honors
Sixty-six Penn State student-athletes, representing seven fall sports, have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, the most of any school in the conference. To be eligible for academic all-conference accolades, student-athletes must be a letterwinner in at least their second academic year at the institution and maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better. The 66 selections are the most ever for Penn State's fall sports, topping the previous record of 55 in 1997. Northwestern was second among Big Ten schools with 50 honorees this past fall. The Penn State football team led the way with 15 selections, tied with Iowa for most in the league, while the women's cross country team was next with 12 honorees. Among the Penn State honorees was volleyball standout Bonnie Bremner, who maintains a 3.56 in Speech Communications, led the Lions to the Big Ten title and the NCAA Championship finals and was named Big Ten Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. A first team AVCA All-American, Bremner also was the GTE Academic All-American of the Year for volleyball. The Big Ten recognized 436 fall student-athletes, 25 more than in 1997.
