Gymmen victorious at West Point Open
In their season opener, the No. 7 Penn State men’s gymnastics team won the team title with a 222.3 Saturday in the West Point Open.
No. 11 Massachusetts was second with a 213.65, while No. 18 Army placed third with a 209.25.
Penn State swept the all-around final, as senior Ron Roeder and sophomores and Adam Benas Tobias Ekman placed 1-2-3, respectively. Roeder scored a 55.65, Benas a 54.85, and Ekman finished with a 54.55. Senior Danny Beigel placed sixth with a 53.85. The top eight finishers -- including ties -- of each individual event advanced to the finals. On floor, Benas and Roeder placed 2-3, respectively, while Beigel finished sixth. On Pommel horse, sophomore Josh Malecki placed second, Ekman third, sophomore Dominic Brindle fifth, and Roeder seventh. The Lions were also dominant on rings, with Beigel finishing first, and Roeder, sophomore Chris Lakeman, Malecki, and Ekman taking places 3-6, respectively. Sophomore Rob Saliski came in eighth. Sunday, the Lions competed in the individual event finals at West Point. Penn State was led by Roeder, who placed first in rings and parallel bars with scores of 9.8 and 9.45, respectively. He finished second in the floor exercises with a 9.5.
