Swimming teams start second half strong
The Penn State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both began the second half of the season with victories. Fresh off a tough winter training trip in Florida, the Lady Lions (3-2 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) defeated Ohio State, 170-129. They took first in 10 of 15 events in the team's first dual meet since the Penn State Invitational in December. Leading the way for the Lady Lions was sophomore Katie Anderson, who won the 1000 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle with times of 10:18.09, 2:03.69, and 5:01.08, respectively. Teammates Once again, junior Jaime Jaax won both the one- and three-meter diving events. She scored a 265.00 one the one-meter and a 297.83 on the three-meter. Jaax is still undefeated on both boards this season. For the men, the 200 medley relay team of Josh Weaver, Gavin Carscallen, Matt Teeter and Brian Hostetler swam a 1:33.38, breaking the record of 1:34.26, set in 1989 by Clemson. The 200 freestyle relay team of Bob Molettiere, Hostetler, Shaun Anderson and Dan Okoniewski won in a time of 1:22.86, breaking the mark of 1:23.81, set by North Carolina in 1993. Individual winners for the Nittany Lions were Steve Hodgins in the 1000 freestyle (9:40.38), Holden Comeau in the 200 freestyle, Joe Peresan in the 400 individual medley (4:05.08), Carscallen in the 100 butterfly (50.92), Okoniewski in the 100 freestyle (45.72) and Weaver in the 100 backstroke (50.68). The win against Clemson extends the men's non-conference winning streak to 16 meets.
