Queen Bee plays last show

What the musicians played off as "business as usual" was anything but the norm for the estimated 700 fans who enjoyed Queen Bee and the Blue Hornet Band's final performance.

The band played two sets Saturday night at Cafe 210 West, 210 W. College Ave. Owner Hal McCullough said the 10:30 p.m. show sold about 275 reserved tickets. He said the bar and restaurant would be filled to capacity for the show.

Mark Ross, guitarist for Queen Bee and the Blue Hornet Band, plays the blues Saturday night at Cafe 210 West, 210 W. College Ave. The appearance was the band’s last performance.

Before the show, Queen Bee guitarist Mark Ross said the band would play some of its hit songs, but it did not have anything special planned.

Lead singer Tonya Brown echoed these thoughts before she went on stage.

"In some respects, we want it to be just another show," she said.

For some fans, the farewell concert was their first and only chance to see the band play live. After 14 years, the band members decided to go their separate ways.

Tom Corey of State College said as a blues fan, he decided to take advantage of his last chance to see the group play.

"I just wanted to see them before they quit," he said.

After starting ahead of schedule with an instrumental intro, members of the band took turns singing before Brown took the stage. Fans cheered as she broke into one of the band's trademark songs, "Thank You."

"It's been a great ride," Ross said. "I would like to thank everyone … for letting us do for a living what we would have done for free."
