Penn professor to discuss university issues tonight

"Water buffalo" was the name Eden Jacobowitz called a group of black female students who were causing a raucous outside his dorm window at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993.

He was prosecuted by the university for violating Penn's policy on racial harassment and was faced with the choice of either an academic plea bargain or a judicial hearing.

One of the Penn professors who advised him throughout the proceedings, Alan Charles Kors, will deliver a speech titled "The Assault upon Liberty and Dignity at Penn State University" at 8 p.m. today in the HUB Ballroom. The speech will be presented by Penn State Young Americans for Freedom as part of its "Voices of Freedom" lecture series.

In a book he recently co-authored, The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America's Campuses, Kors writes there is a "tyranny" on university campuses nationwide

The topics Kors will cover in his speech tonight include multicultural education and diversity, designated group identities, harassment codes and in loco parentis residential social work. He will also speak about the alcohol issue at Penn State.

Kors will also be a guest on the WKPS program "Point/Counterpoint" at 5:30 p.m. today.
