Expansion of stadium to begin after football season
By CHRISTOPHER ANTONACCI
During a May meeting, the Penn State Board of Trustees unanimously
approved an $84 million project to renovate and expand Beaver
Stadium. The project, which is slated for completion in 2001,
will begin after the 1998 football season.
The Beaver Stadium Expansion and Renovation Project will add about
10,000 seats, raising the stadium's capacity to 103,500, including
the addition of 58 skyboxes. | |||||

Beaver Stadium can no longer meet the needs of football fans with its current capacity. |
"If we didn't build it right now," said Penn State football
coach Joe Paterno, "the whole program would suffer."
The project comes as a response to the ever-increasing demand
for Nittany Lion football tickets, especially from members of
the Nittany Lion Club who do not receive tickets. Members annually
contribute to the university's scholarship fund but do not receive
tickets.
Stadium facilities, such as the concession stands, restrooms and
locker rooms, will be renovated and club seating will be added.
Other improvements include the updating the scoreboard and improving
handicap accessibility to the stadium and the media room.
The revenue generated from the additional seating, especially
the skyboxes, and private sources will help to finance the project.
This will not be the first time the stadium's seating capacity
has increased since it was moved from the western portion of campus.
The seating above the north end zone was completed in 1991, adding
about 10,000 seats.
After the expansion is completed, Beaver Stadium will become the
second largest college football stadium in the nation behind the
University of Michigan's Michigan Stadium. R E L A T E D L I N K S The following links are to sites not operated by The Daily Collegian. Each link opens in a new browser window.
