Thousands riot downtown
A mostly intoxicated mob of at least 1,500 18-to-25-year-olds caused extensive damage on Beaver Avenue yesterday morning, knocking down street lights, starting fires in the street, smashing windows in three local businesses and destroying car windshields. Twenty people were arrested when police dispersed the crowd at about 4:15 a.m., but not before rioters caused minor injuries and at least $50,000 in damage, the State College Police Department said.

Tuition increases for next semester
Tuition will be increasing by only 3.7 percent for next fall, but mandatory fees at University Park will increase by 26 percent.

Heicklen's bail set at $50,000
After being arrested Thursday at the start of a 30-hour marijuana smoke-out, retired professor Julian Heicklen was placed in Centre County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail by District Justice Carmine Prestia.

Man falls off parking deck
An 18-year-old Boalsburg resident fell off the Fraser Plaza Garage last night and suffered multiple traumatic injuries, according to a press release from the State College Police Department.

This weekend wrapped up the 32nd Annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, which drew thousands of people to the State College area to shop at the artists' booths, attend performances and partake of festival activities.

Men charged with rape of student
Two men are being charged with the alleged rape of a 19-year-old female Penn State student outside Acacia fraternity Saturday night, the State College Police Department said.

Firefighters extinguish North Gill Street blaze
The Alpha Fire Co. responded to a structure fire yesterday morning, according to a press release from the fire company. The cause of the fire was unknown as of yesterday afternoon and the fire is still under investigation, according to the fire company.
