Beaver Stadium construction set
Size does matter -- or at least it does with stadiums. The University Board of Trustees unanimously approved the addition of about 10,000 seats to Beaver Stadium at its May meeting.

Township supervisors discuss proposed Patton shopping center
How to create a successful regional shopping destination without compromising the quality of life in nearby residential areas was the target of discussion last night at the township's Board of Supervisors meeting.

Robbins' case closed
A plea agreement reached May 22 in the Centre County Courthouse marked the final chapter of the HUB lawn shooting case. Jillian Robbins, who killed one student and injured another in the Fall of 1996, will spend the next 30 to 60 years in prison.

Fresh start for Summer Session students
Many members of the Class of 2002 found themselves moving to the University for Summer Session just days after high school graduation. Some students said they were not thrilled to lose out on a summer vacation, but other students who begin in the summer were excited about the change.

Construction on the HUB/Paul Robeson Cultural Center continues through the summer. Work also goes on at the Paterno Library, Bigler Road, Pollock Halls, the area surrounding the Applied Research Lab and other areas.

From June 4 to 7, athletes, families and coaches converged on State College for the 1998 Pennsylvania Special Olympics Summer Games. The University has hosted the event, the largest state-level competition, for 11 years.

Suspect charged in assault of local girl
A little more than two weeks after a 16-year old was allegedly raped, State College police say they may have found the offender.

Sight seeing
Northwestern Pennsylvania -- the final frontier of the commonwealth. From May 10 to 12, about 80 new University faculty members explored this wooded frontier -- learning more about the state in which they teach. As part of the Road Scholars outreach tour, faculty members went on scheduled tours of University campuses and factories located in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Hershey nurses ratify first Geisinger contract
The tentative, two-year agreement, which must be prepared for the official signatures, began Monday and expires June 30, 2000. It offers the nurses a 3-percent wage increase in the first year and a minimum 2-percent increase in the second.

Electrical system not cause of fire, police determine
The cause of the March cabin fire that killed 11 people on Madisonburg Mountain was not the electrical system of the cabin, Pennsylvania State Police at Rockview said in a May 19 news release.

Family ties: John Fritz chooses fatherhood, not wrestling
John Fritz, the fourth winningest head coach in Penn State wrestling history, has abdicated the throne he occupied for six seasons.

Giants take Bump in first round, No. 25 overall
Louis Bump took a single piece of paper out of his wallet on Tuesday, June 2, and simply threw it away. Penn State pitcher Nate Bump fires a pitch to a Ohio State batter on April, 24. Bump was drafted last week in the first round by the Giants.

Indiana's lady golfers reign at Big Ten Championships
For the Penn State women's golf team, things didn't turn out exactly as planned. While hosting the 1998 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships on May 1-3, the Lady Lions finished a respectable but "disappointing" fifth out of eleven teams.

Sluggers come up short at Big Tens
Despite falling short of a Big Ten title, the Lions made their strongest showing ever in the Big Ten playoffs.

Netmen make history with NCAA win
Although the Lions finished with a sub-.500 record, the team got some much needed experience. The first year players now know what to expect from Big Ten competition next season, as well as what the competition is like in the NCAA tournament.

Laxer teams come up empty, primed for next season
After another tough loss in another season of almost, but not quite, the Nittany Lions will start next season with a clean slate. For three of the last four seasons, the men's lacrosse team has come close, but failed to reach the playoffs.
