Glitch halts card access
If any female students have ever wanted card access to a male
dorm, they may have missed their chance last night.
A backup battery unit malfunctioned at about 8:10 p.m., causing
some dorms problems with card access. The unit supplies power
to a computer to keep card access running if the power goes out,
said Joel Weidner, assistant director of business and information
systems for auxiliary services. The device malfunctioned, but
was on-line by 10 p.m., he said.
During a malfunction some older card-access readers can cause
the older models: rejecting all cards or letting anyone with
a card into a dorm. Female and coed dorms reject all cards, he
said, and male dorms let in anyone with a card. Weidner said new
readers have been purchased and will be installed in six weeks.
The new readers will prevent power supply malfunctions from affecting
card access in the future.
