At the USG election tomorrow, voters will pick from a list of candidates who have promised to work toward improving student services, including University Health Services, libraries, recreation facilities, the Loop and classroom hours.

Each USG presidential candidate explained what USG should do about student services.

USG Elections Guide Caroline Casagrande and Brian Olivo

The administration should start making student services a higher priority, Casagrande said.

She said the University should use corporate sponsorship to reduce the price of the Loop bus and increase staffing at University Health Services.

Mario Ciabarra and Allison Szabaga

One service the University should offer students is a "tenant-landlord resolution council" to help resolve any conflicts off-campus students have with apartment landlords, Ciabarra said.

Library hours also need to be addressed, he said.

Roshani Herath and Christine Muchi

USG should take existing facilities and look at ways to improve them, Herath said.

For example, the Intramural Building should have longer hours to offer more nighttime activities to students, she said.

Rocco Impreveduto and Marc Nathan

It's important to look at the feasibility of any changes before promising to make improvements, Impreveduto said. For example, lower bus prices and extended library hours could cost the University more money, he said.

Todd Krout and Karen Skomorucha

The student activity fee, if implemented well, can help student organizations offer additional services to students, Krout said.

Student services such as recreation facilities should be improved without charging students any extra fees, he said.

Matt Lohr and B. J. Werzyn

USG has the power to change some services, but cannot change others, Lohr said.

As an example, Lohr pointed out that USG can request a lower Loop fare, but cannot mandate the change.

Andrea Prinzi and J. P. Jaworski

Libraries and dining commons should be open later as a place for students to study, Prinzi said.

Corporate sponsorships might be used to improve some services, but any extra funding should be for the most useful projects first, she said.

Kornelius P. Spankum and Kendra Ciesla

Although some student services have improved, such as University Health Services, student services are the worst part of the University, Ciesla said.

Ciesla added that student services here are worse than at anywhere else she has seen.
