USG Academic Assembly elects executive members
After a three-hour meeting Sunday night, Undergraduate Student
Government Academic Assembly elected David Kayal (junior-economics)
as assembly president and re-elected Nathan Cline (senior-kinesiology)
vice president for next year.
Members of the USG branch, which was almost disbanded last year
for poor performance, sit on the University Faculty Senate, deal
with general student educational problems and specific student
academic complaints.
After the internal election, Kayal, currently an assembly member,
said he looks forward to continuing to rebuild the assembly, adding
that he plans to focus on the assembly's role in the Senate.
"I feel very strongly that your leader has to have knowledge
and have experience with Faculty Senate because that's where our
power lies," said Kayal, during his speech.
He said in the future, the assembly needs to become more involved
in faculty committees whose outcomes directly affect students,
such as the current General Education Implementation Committee.
Kayal ran against assembly support staff member Liz Kinland (sophomore-political
science) who the current assembly president Desha Girod (sophomore-political
science) endorsed.
Cline defeated assembly member Dena Zakaria (sophomore-biology),
who said Cline won because his current position made him the more
qualified and deserving candidate.
