New Collegian leaders chosen

By EMILY REHRING
Collegian Staff Writer

After enduring a 20-minute interview last night by the Collegian Inc. Board of Directors and submitting a proposal a few weeks ago, Bridgette Blair was selected as the new editor in chief and Scott Fallgren was selected as the new business manager of The Daily Collegian for the 1998-1999 academic year.

Blair (junior-journalism) was chosen from the three candidates, including Jim Reid (senior-English) and Molly Fellin (junior-journalism). Blair will take over for current editor in chief Megan Donley. Donley, who will graduate in August, will be in charge until the day after the last newspaper comes out for this semester.

"We felt that Bridgette was the best fit for our needs," said Board President David Day. "All of the candidates had their strengths and all would have made good editors. We chose Bridgette for her leadership potential."

Since starting on the staff in Spring 1996, Blair has served as Greeks beat reporter, administration beat reporter, opinions editor, campus staff editor and is currently the assistant metro editor.

Donley said she has been impressed with Blair since her acceptance on the staff.

"I think Bridgette possesses the level of enthusiasm and right kind of attitude necessary to lead the news division," Donley said.

Blair said she plans to deal with the redesign of the newspaper and continue to improve the newspaper's content.

"I think I bring an excited, positive attitude to the Collegian," Blair said. "I hope to motivate already talented people and take them to the next level of journalism."

Mark Parfitt, metro editor, said he feels Blair brings strong leadership qualities to the position.

"I've been able to work with her this semester," Parfitt said. "She has been able to motivate our staff to produce excellent metro copy. I'm sure that next year, she'll be able to spread her motivation to the entire Collegian staff."

In the business manager selection, Fallgren (junior-marketing), who was the only candidate for the business manager position, takes over for outgoing business manager Megan Hennigan.

Fallgren brings a lot of experience to the position. Currently, he is a team leader for the sales department of the business division. Since starting on the staff in the fall of 1995, Fallgren has served as an office representative and account executive.

"I am confident in Scott's abilities to fulfill his duties as a good business manager for next year," Hennigan said.

Some ideas Fallgren has for the upcoming year include using the radio for soliciting advertising, utilizing both local and national markets and creating a supportive environment for the staff.

"I truly believe in this newspaper," Fallgren said. "There are a lot of terrific people here. I've had such a great experience with it and I felt this was a way to give back."
